Chess in Leipzig and Halle (Saale)

Leipzig and Halle (Saale) lie in two Länder, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, and their chess runs on two tracks. Clubs meet on fixed weeknights in both cities and in the towns of the Landkreis Leipzig, Nordsachsen and the Saalekreis. Beside them, open Schachtreffs in a bookshop, a board-game café and neighbourhood cafés need no membership, and senior meeting places set out boards in the morning. School AGs are for their own pupils.

Chess960 in Leipzig and Halle

At the board, Chess960 here belongs to one organiser: the Vielerlei Spielerei collective, which has played six Freestyle tournaments at the Garage Ost in Leipzig, the sixth on 24 October 2026, and which held a Fischer-Random tournament of seven Swiss rounds at ten minutes plus three seconds in the Spielehaus Halle on 1 May 2025. None of the club pages read mentions Chess960 on a club evening.

Chess960 shuffles the back-rank pieces into one of 960 starting positions before each game, so prepared openings stop helping and both players are thinking for themselves from the first move. Between tournaments it can be played online at ch960.com.

How the lists are ordered

Leipzig Chess lists 83 entries; 83 of them are current or wait for a newer dated trace. Clubs come from the league portals of the two state federations and from their own pages; open meetings, senior rounds and courses from city event calendars, the monthly programmes of the meeting places, the Volkshochschule and the university sports centre; school AGs from the all-day lists the schools publish. All of it was read between and .

The entry with the newest dated trace stands first in every list; nothing is scored, sponsored or put in a league table. Where no page gives a detail, the entry says so instead of guessing. The marks beside each source, and the line where the area ends, are explained under where each entry comes from.

Know a place that is missing?

Clubs change rooms, meeting places print a new programme every month or two and school AGs start again each autumn, so an entry can fall behind. Send a short note with a link to a page that shows the place or the change.
